Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds) delivers a brutal western from the southern states. In exchange for freedom and a chance to rescue his wife, enslaved Django (Jamie Foxx) joins the mercurial bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) on a journey through the bloody southern trails of 1850s America. All roads lead to a place called ‘Candie Land’, a plantation run by the vicious Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Tarantino’s violent ‘southern’ western is inspired by the films of Sergio Corbucci, namely his nihilistic fire starter Django (1966). The original Django ushered in a new era of brutal, bloodthirsty westerns and featured a gun-toting drifter who dragged a small coffin behind him.
Also screening on Friday March 15th.
